Cookie Joy

Inspired by Judith G. Klausner’s gloriously intricate Oreo cookie portraits below (via Toxel)

I designed an interactive art exhibit with Oreos. It looks something like this:

But seriously, how cool are those Oreo portraits? I’m going to try convince my parents to get these for our next family portrait :)

Jazz Cows & the Universality of Music

Some incongruent facts:

  • I interpret the adage music is a universal language to be limited to among human
  • I love & fully believe in Happy Feet à la Warner Bros
  • There is an ancient Chinese metaphor (对牛弹琴) which literally means “playing music to a cow” and figuratively “communicating with someone who cannot/will not respond.”
  • Zoomusicology & biomusicology exist…!

From facts to truth:

When a dear friend of mine, a passionate jazz musician who walked the Camino de Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage, wrote in her blog about cows in a pasture in the south of France swooning to music, I tumbled out of my chair in laughter. But who knew! K, you are right: Cows love jazz

Kerouac, On Believing

A dear friend of mine has been really getting into beat poetry recently, so I made this mashup with one of my favorite Kerouac lines for her.

A handwritten letter tip

Handwritten letters are the teddy bears of communication, instantly endearing and like a hug of affirmation that you are real, lovable, and old school. I firmly believe God should give every person who willingly writes letters by hands a halo, or at least some nice shine [we do strain 'em eyes, especially if we're really old school and write by candlelight...].

Ever since i graduated from college last may, life has opened up more time and space, or perhaps i just got older and slightly better at time management,
to invest thought into presentation as well as content

At any given time, though, I always have more mental letters than letters actually started. So, one trick I’ve developed for mobilizing myself:

Buy adorable stamps I am excited to use / show off

It’s a strange incentive, but works so well. I promise.

My current favorites are Go Green , Poker peeps, and Jazz (above). I literally have 40 or more each of these. When other kids go shopping for kicks and cheetos, I go … get me some stamps. Just givin’ the postal system some love, y’all.

Happy Friday!

p.s. Wouldn’t it be fabulous if the postal system produced “puzzle” stamp sets? Maybe of a bike or hot air balloon? Or even customizable! Or monochrome stamps?! Maybe white? Forget color, I think I’ve found a new career direction!

p.p.s. Utility companies and banks should consider hiring people to hand write bills and whatnot, don’t you think? This will infuse our culture with a renewed appreciation for the craft of writing, increase jobs, and make companies think twice before spamming at the cost of the environment. Hey, it’ll probably work just as well as Starbucks’ Create Jobs for U.S.A. Program. Just playing :)

Badass, defined

Keep calm and … ?

Regarding life being surprising and Pollock-esque, a gentle reminder to breathe might be useful. Friends, I present the story of the keep calm movement.

It started as a WWII poster?!? Ok, i won’t ruin any more of this lovely 3 min documentary for ya. But i seriously recommend watching this, esp if you, like me, often cite variations of the keep calm and <fill in the blank> motto. This video fulfilled my day’s learn something new quota.

Some of my favs:

  • keep calm and rock on
  • keep calm and drop that bass
  • keep calm and educate thyself

What are your favorite variations of keep calm? Please do share; I would love to add to my repertoire of things to mutter while running in circles and flailing :)

Also, just to throw in some diversity/for the rebels, panic
